How to Market a Law Firm: What Actually Brings in Cases

TL;DR

The firms that win locally own the Google Map Pack, rank for their practice-area searches, and have more recent five-star reviews than the firm down the street. Referrals and reputation compound on top. Prioritize by the case value and search demand in your market — not by whatever a vendor is selling this month.

Ask ten lawyers how they market their firm and you’ll get ten different answers, most of them some version of “referrals, and I pay for a few things I’m not sure work.” That uncertainty is the whole problem. Legal marketing is one of the most expensive and most crowded categories online — personal injury keywords routinely cost $50 or more per click in paid search — so guessing is costly. Here’s how the marketing actually breaks down, and where a firm’s money is best spent.

If you want the unfiltered owner-to-owner version, one of the most-read threads in r/LawFirm is lawyers comparing exactly this. The recurring theme: the firms happiest with their marketing treat Google visibility and reputation as the foundation, and everything else as a supplement — not the other way around.

Start with how clients actually find a lawyer

When someone needs an attorney, the modern path is almost always the same: they search. “Car accident lawyer near me.” “Divorce attorney [city].” “Estate planning lawyer.” And the majority of those searches never leave the top of the page — the Google Map Pack, the three local results that sit above the regular listings, captures a large share of the clicks on local-intent searches, and for law firms it drives a big share of the calls (BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, 2024).

So the first question isn’t “should we do SEO or ads or social.” It’s “when someone in our city searches for what we do, are we one of the three firms they see first?” If the answer is no, that’s where the money goes first, because that’s where the cases are.

The channels that actually bring in cases

Here’s the honest ranking for most firms, highest-leverage first.

1. The Google Map Pack and your Google Business Profile. This is the single highest-return place to compete. An optimized Business Profile, in the right categories, with a steady flow of recent reviews and accurate information, is what gets you into those top three local results. It’s also where a huge portion of “call now” clicks happen. If you do one thing this year, it’s this.

2. Local and practice-area SEO. Ranking in the regular organic results for the specific searches that produce cases — each practice area you handle, plus the “near me” and city variations. This is a research decision, not a guess: you find which practice areas have real search demand in your market, weigh them against what your site can realistically rank for, and build the pages that win. A firm that ranks for “motorcycle accident lawyer [city]” is collecting high-value cases while competitors fight over generic terms.

3. Reviews and reputation. Reviews do double duty — they help you rank in the Map Pack, and they decide who gets the call once a prospect is comparing two firms (here’s how to get more of them without breaking Google’s rules). The vast majority of people read reviews before choosing a local business, and many won’t contact one rated below four stars (BrightLocal, 2024). Recent, plentiful, five-star reviews are one of the cheapest and most effective advantages a firm can build.

4. Local Service Ads (the Google Verified badge). For firms that want to accelerate, Local Service Ads sit at the very top of the results with a “Google Verified” badge, and you’re charged per lead rather than per click. It’s the one paid placement I consistently recommend for law firms, because it’s high-intent and measurable — you can tie spend directly to leads. Traditional pay-per-click has its place, but for most firms owned search plus Local Service Ads outperforms renting generic clicks.

5. A website that actually converts. All of the above drives people to your site. If it’s slow, dated, or doesn’t make it obvious how to call or book a consult, you’re paying to send traffic to a leak. Your site’s job is narrow and important: build enough trust in a few seconds that a stranger picks up the phone.

6. Referrals and relationships. Still the best clients most firms get — and reputation online now feeds this too. A referred prospect often Googles the firm before calling. If your online presence is strong, referrals close more easily. If it’s weak or invisible, you lose people who were handed to you.

What usually wastes a firm’s money

Common spendWhy it often disappoints
Generic “brand awareness” advertisingLaw is intent-driven — you want people actively searching for help, not passive impressions.
Chasing the most expensive, most generic keyword”Personal injury lawyer” alone is a bloodbath; specific practice-area and local terms convert better for less.
A beautiful website nobody can findDesign without visibility is an expensive brochure. Rankings and reputation come first.
Long directory contracts sold as “exclusive”Many are shared, oversold, and hard to measure. Owned search you can actually track.
Buying leads you don’t controlRented leads dry up the day you stop paying. Owned rankings compound.

The pattern: money spent on owning your visibility compounds; money spent renting attention vanishes the moment you stop.

Prioritize by case value, not by tactic

The right plan for a personal injury firm and an estate planning firm are different, because the case values and how clients search are different. A PI firm can justify aggressive competition for high-value accident cases. A high-volume practice might prioritize speed-to-lead and reviews. This is why a stock “law firm marketing package” rarely fits — the priorities should come from your actual economics: which case types are worth the most to you, and where the winnable demand is in your market.

That’s the entire reason we start every engagement with an audit instead of a template. Which practice-area pages to build, which searches to chase first, where the fastest wins are — those come out of your market and your competitors, not a menu.

If you want to see where the cases are hiding in your market, that’s what our law firm marketing and law firm SEO work is built to find. We report in leads — calls, consultations, and contact-form submissions — and everything we build, you own.
